Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable legislation, documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient operation of a truck or trailer mounted attenuator including:

accessing and interpreting the truck or trailer mounted attenuator manufacturer’s instructions

accessing and interpreting workplace documentation, such as job safety analysis or safe work method statements

accessing and interpreting site traffic management plan and safety plan

accessing and interpreting National Guidelines, Code of Practice for truck or trailer mounted attenuators

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the operation of a truck or trailer mounted attenuator that meets all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communication techniques and equipment to convey information to others

using effective, efficient and safe radio communication procedures to ensure safety of work colleagues and road users

participating in pre-work safety meetings, toolbox meetings or similar

maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements

organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

demonstrates completion of operating a truck or trailer mounted attenuator that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion, at three (3) different road sites, at least one of which will include working in a mobile/progressively moving work situation including:

operation of the truck or trailer mounted attenuator, according to national guidelines, manufacturer’s instructions, site safety plan, traffic management plan, and environmental protection requirements

conducting truck and attenuator pre-operational checks, including any attachments, and reported any faults

moving and positioning the truck or trailer mounted attenuator to meet manufacturer’s specifications, traffic and site regulations, and traffic management plan requirements

positioning other traffic controls and signs as required in the traffic management plan

carrying out inspection and fault finding on the truck or trailer mounted attenuator as per manufacturer’s instructions and organisational requirements

conducts clean up of work area, and store tools, plant and equipment safely and following organisational requirements


Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when operating a truck or trailer mounted attenuator:

legislative, organisation and site requirements and procedures for:

risk assessment and management

statutory compliance

workplace health and safety

site and equipment safety requirements

emergency and environmental issues

response to and contingency plans for impact incidents

quality management

verbal and written communication

National Guidelines and Standards, Code of Practice for Truck and/or Trailer Mounted Attenuators

project traffic management plans

mobile traffic control and general traffic control responsibilities and authorities

equipment types, characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations

operational, maintenance and basic diagnostic procedures

processes for the calculation of travel speed

civil infrastructure terminology

job safety analysis / safe work method statements
